Event Description:
(United States, 2010, 107 min.) Gasland, directed by Josh Fox, presents a compelling and educational depiction of the consequences of fracking for natural gas in the Midwest and its effects on local residents. Josh Fox and his family were offered $100,000 by a natural gas company to lease their land in Pennsylvania for fracking, which inspired Fox to begin a quest to find the truth of fracking, the harm that come from this method of extracting natural gas, and the involvement of the US government in the legislative side of fracking. Not only does Fox reveal the chronic health problems families are facing because of contaminated water supplies, he also sheds light on the discussion of the Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemicals Act, a bill to alter the Safe Drinking Water Act. With intelligent interviews and well-constructed footage, Josh Fox contributes a compelling and disquieting film. Gasland is co-sponsored by the UNC Geography Department.
