Event Description The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra will perform a live musical score to accompany Frank Urson's 1927 silent film, "Chicago" as part of the UNC's Schulze Speaker Series and International Film Series.
Chicago (United States, 1927, 118 min.), a classic black and white silent film directed by Frank Urson, is in part the recounting of a true murder story. Based on the play written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, who covered two murders in Chicago for the Chicago Tribune in 1926, Chicago portrays the two female criminals as Roxie Hart (Phyllis Haver), who, although a married woman, enjoys leading a risque life. Jazz-loving and boozing, Roxie delights in the simple pleasures of living and won't have her husband interfering. Deciding to take a lover, she puts her heart and body into the relationship only to discover her boyfriend doesn't intend to stay. Raging with jealousy, she murders her lover and begins a journey of eluding the police and hiding the truth from her husband. Does she succeed? Well, that's for you to decide.
Co-sponsored by the Department of English and Film Studies, Neal Cross Lecture Series, International Film Series and the College of Performing and Visual Arts. This film will be free to all students and community members. |
